In a colonoscopy, a slender, flexible tube known as a colonoscope is inserted into the rectum, allowing the physician to thoroughly inspect the colon. During this examination, any identified polyps can be safely removed through the colonoscope.

Colonoscopies are typically advised for individuals aged 50 and above as part of cancer screening protocols to detect any growths that may indicate the presence of cancer. Should polyps be detected during the colonoscopy, the physician will proceed with a polypectomy to remove them.

There are several methods available for removing polyps, and the specific technique employed will be determined by factors such as the type, size, and location of the polyp

Biopsy forceps are typically utilized to remove small polyps, which are less than 5 millimeters in diameter, while larger polyps, up to 2 centimeters in diameter, can be removed using a snare.

In snare polypectomy, a thin wire is wrapped around the base of the polyp, and heat is applied to remove the growth. Any remaining tissue is then cauterized. More challenging polyps may require techniques such as endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) or endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).

In EMR, a saline solution is injected to elevate the polyp from the surrounding tissue before it is removed in sections. In contrast, ESD involves injecting fluid deep into the polyp to facilitate its removal in one piece.
